THE MISANTHROPE by Moliere translated by Richard Wilbur and directed by Mark Frank opens this Saturday.
“Considered to be Moliere’s finest play.”
A sharp and perceptive comedy about the absurdity and necessity of social manners.
Molière’s misanthrope, Alceste, is a man repulsed by the hypocrisy of his fellow men., so much so that he offends enemies and friends alike with his outspokenness, finding them vain and insincere. Yet his own comic flaw lies in considering himself above all others. He is hopelessly in love with the beautiful but fickle Celimene, who ridicules his attempts to woo her, while entertaining a bunch of flattering admirers.
NB: There will be a TALKBACK with the director after the show on Tuesday 1 April. We hope you will stay and join us!
